8 Wing Trenton is the Royal Canadian Air Force’s main centre for air transport and mobility operations. The base was established during the Second World War as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Since then, it has grown into the backbone of Canada’s military airlift capability. Today, 8 Wing supports domestic emergencies, Arctic operations, humanitarian missions, and global military deployments. It is also home to the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, which manages search-and-rescue missions across a large portion of Canada.Several key flying squadrons are based at 8 Wing Trenton. These include 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron, 426 Transport Training Squadron, 429 Transport Squadron, 436 Transport Squadron, and 437 Transport Squadron. Together, they operate aircraft such as the CC-130J Hercules and the CC-177 Globemaster III. The wing also supports 412 Transport Squadron in Ottawa and 440 Transport Squadron in Yellowknife. Critical support units, including 2 Air Movements Squadron and 8 Air Maintenance Squadron, ensure aircraft are ready to deploy quickly.
